The top two challenges we hear about in our industry is the lack of job applicants and the issue of skills gap. Employers want certain skills. While a big part of the skills gap is a shortage of people skilled in the STEM (science, technology, education, and math) industries, there is also a gap in soft skills such as communication and advanced leadership skills. The top missing soft skills are
1. Positive attitude
2. Communication (verbal and written)
4. Self-management/Time Management/Organizational Skills
5. Willingness to learn
6. Thinking skills (problem solving and decision making)
If you are making a job change, think about how your current skills will assist a potential employer. Transferable skills are your portable skills that you take from job to job (communication and people skills, analytical problem solving and planning skills). Transferable skills along with your personal traits of dependable, flexible, friendly, hard-working, creative, formal, punctual and being a team player can make you stand out among other job applicants.
