In honor of National Social Media Day on Sunday, June 30th, I have decided to blog about the evolution of social media and how times have changed for companies and all of us personally with this invention. Social media has become an integral part of all of our lives. We use it to connect with colleagues, friends and family, to catch up on current events, and, perhaps to entertain ourselves. In 2005, only 5% of people utilized social media. Today over 70% of us use social media on a daily bases for work and pleasure.
What do I mean by social media? Social media is defined as the different forms of online communication used by people to create networks, communities, and collectively share information, ideas, messages, and other content, such as videos.
LinkedIn was one of the first social media sites. It was founded in 2005 with a focus on professional networking, allowing people to connect with businesses and fellow colleagues. It has stayed true to that purpose to this day. I use it to keep connected with my network of colleagues. We also use it at work to recruit people for careers.
Facebook started in 2004. It continues to grow in users. It is used personally to stay in touch with friends and family while businesses use it all the time to showcase products and services. We at Crown Services use it as a recruiting tool.
Twitter started in 2006 and remains true to its course. Twitter did increase the amount of characters we can use for a tweet which is a great advantage. Twitter is wonderful source for bits of information we need to know.
Social media can be used to positively influence our professional and personal lives. The only caveat is for us all to remember that these digital imprints of ourselves are permanent.
How has Social Media changed your life professionally and personally?
